New Delhi: Tennis star Sania Mirza along with her Belgian partner Kirsten Flipkens entered the pre-quarterfinals in seasons’ third Grand Slam-Wimbledon. In the women’s doubles event, the 13th seeded Mirza and Flipkens, last evening, defeated the Brit pair of Naomi Broady and Heather Watson 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The Indo-Belgian duo will be fighting, for the quarterfinal berth tomorrow, against the third seeded team of Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-jan.
Sania Mirza also reached the pre-quarterfinals of mixed doubles event along with her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig. Mirza and Dodig are 4th seeded and they defeated Japanese pair of Yosuke Watanuki and Makoto Ninomiya in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, yesterday.
Purav Raja is another Indian in this event who is due to play his 2nd round match. Purav along with his Japanese partner Eri Hozumi will be playing his match tomorrow. Besides them, Rohan Bopanna had already entered the pre-quarterfinals of the event.
In the Men’s Singles, top ranked, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all have sailed to the pre quarterfinals. In the Women’s Singles, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Johanna Konta are the top seeds that have entered the pre-quarterfinals.
Today is rest day in the grass court grand slam, the matches will resume tomorrow.
