New Delhi: India is truly getting tech-savvy. The Facebook data is the latest testimony to this. Smartphone penetration and increased internet usage have already been making its presence felt.
Now, India has overtaken USA to register largest number of active users on Facebook.
According to a report on TheNextWeb, as of July 13th, Facebook is reporting a total “potential audience” of 241 million active users in India, compared to 240 million in the United States.
A report by HootSuite and WeAreSocial notes that Facebook is referring to these statistics as “potential audience” for advertisers, where the audience in India is shown as bigger than the US.
In the last six months, active users in India has shot up by 27%, as opposed to 12% in the USA during the same period.
And if the growth rate is any indication, India is likely to stretch this lead in the next few quarters to become Facebook’s largest market.
However, social media penetration in India is relatively low where only 19 percent or 241 million of the subcontinent’s 1.282 billion population, are active social media users. In comparison, 73 percent of the US’s 327 million population are active on social media.
