Ahmedabad/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a warm welcome to Japanese premier Shinzo Abe at the city airport today. Mr Abe, who is on his fourth visit to India, will lay the foundation stone of the ground breaking Mumbai-Ahmedabad “Bullet Train” project tomorrow. He will also be attending the 12th Indo-Japan Summit.

PM Modi, Abe visit iconic mosque in Ahmedabad

After Sabarmati Ashram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe visited the iconic Sidi Sayeed mosque in the city.

The famous 16th century mosque, is the last of the major mosques to be built in Ahmedabad under the Mughal era. It is famous for its intricate latticework.

Late in the evening, PM Modi will host Abe for dinner at a heritage hotel in the city.

At the dinner tonight, a special vegetarian menu has been designed for Abe.

The PM will host the dinner at Ahmedabad’s Agashiye, a popular terrace restaurant of the House of Mangaldas Heritage Hotel.

The staff will serve the food in traditional attire – consisting of dhoti, kurta and a safa (headgear).

The menu will be Gujarati – likely to include dhoklas, raspatra, gota fritters, rice kichidi, kadhi, a bitter gourd and onion sabji called bharela karela-dungri, and bhakri, rotla and roti, puri.

Post roadshow, Modi-Abe visit Sabarmati Ashram

After the road show, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe visited the Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived between 1917 and 1930.

Abe and his wife Akie paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Ashram.

Japan PM’s 2-day visit to India

– Prime Minister Narendra Modi received his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie Abe at Ahmedabad Airport.

– Immediately after Abe and his wife Akie touched down in Ahmedabad, they accompanied PM Modi on a first-of-its-kind 8-km roadshow that will wind its way from the airport to the city’s regional tax office.

– Following that, PM Modi will personally escort Abe to the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi lived between 1917 and 1930.

– The next halt will be at the Sidi Saiyad Mosque, a 16th century monument known for its stone lattice work. Modi and Abe will then dine at Ahmedabad’s iconic ‘Agashiye’ restaurant located near the mosque. Agashiye is a Gujarati ‘thali’ restaurant that’s spread over two huge terraces

– Abe is coming to India on a two-day visit to attend the India-Japan annual summit meeting. The 12th edition of the summit, which will be the fourth meeting between Modi and Abe, will be held in Gandhinagar tomorrow. The two leaders will review the recent progress in the multifaceted co-operation between India and Japan under the framework of their ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ and will set its future direction.

– Modi and Abe will also attend a function to mark the commencement of work of India’s first high-speed rail project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
