New Delhi: The Allahabad High Court on Thursday acquitted the dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the 2008 double murder case of their teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.
14-year-old Aarushi Talwar, daughter of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar was found dead with her throat slit at her Noida home. The body of their domestic help Hemraj was found on the terrace of Talwars’ house, two days later.
Here’s a timeline of events:
May 16: Aarushi Talwar, daughter of a dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, was found dead in her bedroom in Noida family house.
The missing domestic help became the prime suspect in the murder case.
May 17: Hemraj was found dead on the terrace of the Talwar residence.
May 18: Preliminary investigation in the case suggested the murders were conducted with clinical precision and an inside job was suspected.
May 21: Delhi police joins the probe.
May 22: Police suspects it to be a case of honour killing. Police speaks to Aarushi’s friend. Her parents are suspected.
May 23: Rajesh Talwar was arrested for the double murder.
May 31: The murder case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
June 13: Rajesh Talwar’s compounder Krishna was called in for questioning. The servant of Talwar’s friends Raj Kumar was called in 10 days later along with Vijay Mandal, the domestic help of their neighbours were also nabbed.
July 12: Ghaziabad court gives bail to Rajesh Talwar after the CBI fails to provide evidence.
January 5: The investigative body moves the court to seek permission for narco test on Talwar couple.
December 29: Closure report of CBI comes in– Rajesh Talwar is the main but there is no evidence against him.
January 25: Rajesh Talwar was attacked on the premises of Ghaziabad court.
February 9: A special court rejected the CBI closure report and ordered that the dentist couple is tried for their daughter Aarushi’s murder.
The charges also included allegations of destruction of evidence.
A bailable warrant was issued a bailable warrant after the couple failed to appear in the court.
March 14: CBI wants and argues Rajesh Talwar’s bail be cancelled.
April 30: Wife of Rajesh Talwar, Nupur Talwar was arrested.
May 3: A sessions court rejected Nupur Talwar’s bail plea.
May 25: Talwars were charged by Ghaziabad court with murder, conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
April: The CBI told the court that Aarushi and Hemraj were murdered by Rajesh and Nupur Talwar. CBI also said that Aarushi and Hemraj were found in objectionable and compromising position.
May 3: Before a special court, the defence counsel pleads to summon 14 people, including CBI joint director Arun Kumar as a witness. CBI opposed the plea.
May 6: Trial court ordered to record Talwas’ statements.
October 18: CBI closes its arguments and said that the couple “misled” investigators.
November 25: The court delivers its verdict in the double murder case. Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were found guilty.
November 26: Quantum of punishment delivered and Talwars were sentenced to life in prison by CBI court.
