Lucknow: At least 18 people have been killed and 17 injured as a double-decker Volvo bus turned turtle in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. Those injured have been admitted to district hospital.
The bus overturned after hitting a divider in Tirathpur village, almost 25 km from the district headquarters on the Mainpuri-Etawah road, at around 5.30 am, Mainpuri Additional Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Singh told media persons. High speed was believed to be the cause of the accident.
Mostly daily wagers in double-decker bus
The bus, carrying 60-70 persons was coming from Jaipur in Rajasthan and heading towards Farrukhabad. Those travelling in the bus were mostly labourers, returning to their native villages in Uttar Pradesh from Rajasthan.
Most of the victims have been identified and they are from Kannauj, Mainpuri and Farrukhabad districts.
CM Yogi announces Rs 2 lakh
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced Rs 2 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Expressing grief and sorrow on the accident he has also directed the officials to provide proper medical facilities to injured.
President, PM Modi condole loss of lives
President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed sadness at the tragic incident. In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, the administration is taking steps to help affected people. He also extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and wished an early recovery to the injured
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic accident in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Mr Modi hoped that those who are injured recover at the earliest.
