Linking PAN to Aadhaar stands, not mandatory for bank accounts and mobile number: Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and said that it empowers the marginalised sections of the society.
The Supreme Court allowed the linking of Aadhaar with PAN or Permanent Account Number, which is mandatory for the filing of income tax return (ITR).
While the majority judgment, written by Justice AK Sikri in concurrence with CJI Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar, upheld seeding of PAN with Aadhaar, it set aside linking Aadhaar to bank accounts and mobile phone numbers.
In the verdict, the Supreme Court also said that No mobile company can demand “Aadhaar card”.
