New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has withdrawn Rs 2,000 notes from circulation but it will still be a legal tender. The Central Bank has advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 banknotes with immediate effect and provide deposit or exchange facilities from May 23 to September 30, up to a limit of Rs 20,000.
The Rs 2,000 denomination notes came into existence after the historic step of demonetisation of Rs 1,000 denomination notes and change to Rs 500 currency notes in November 2016. The decision has been taken under RBI’s ‘Clean Notes Policy’. RBI has asked the public to deposit or exchange the Rs 2,000 notes with banks or in the 19 Regional Offices.
Amid this huge step, netizens have started sharing their reactions to RBI’s notice. People are also sharing hilarious memes on the internet.

RBI to withdraw Rs 2000 currency note from circulation. In memory of this technologically advanced currency note with “chip”, that was released as part of the demonetisation drama. Also remembering the TV anchors who hailed the hi-tech note with chip. pic.twitter.com/SgyXRUgjND

While people began to pour in their reactions, the move is set to invite political discourse as well.
RBI noted that the objective of introducing Rs 2,000 banknotes was met when other denominations became available in adequate quantities. The printing of Rs 2,000 banknotes was stopped back in 2018-19 and ATMs also refrained from issuing the denomination.
RBI observed that the Rs 2,000 notes were not commonly being used for transactions. The total value of these currency notes in circulation declined from Rs 6.73 lakh crore in 2018 to Rs 3.62 lakh crore in 2023.
