New De3lhi: We can all agree that optical illusions are incredibly fascinating. However, they also frequently leave people perplexed. You’ll also be perplexed by the optical deception we have in store for you. Do you know what makes this illusion more intriguing? that it was made using paper. It concerns a square that seems to be altering in colour as it is moved over a sheet of paper.
This illusion was developed in Japan by psychology professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka at Ritsumeikan University. He recently posted a video on his personal Twitter account. Since being tweeted, the video has also been shared numerous times.
“A demo of light perception,” Akiyoshi captioned the video. The opening image of the video shows someone moving a square across some paper. The square appears to be changing colour as it advances from one corner to the other.

Do you understand what a contrast illusion is? Simultaneous contrast illusion refers to the phenomenon that gives the impression that the square’s colour is shifting. The square’s colour does not actually vary; however, when viewed against different coloured backgrounds, its luminosity appears to change. The square is perceived by the brain as having a lighter colour on a darker background and a darker colour on a lighter background.
