Ajmer 92 Review: A thought-provoking movie that sheds light on the horrors of 1992’s Ajmer scandal

New Delhi: Following a number of controversies and outcry around its release, Pushpendra Singh’s directorial Ajmer 92 finally made it to the big screens today. Let’s talk about its cast, plot, story, acting and more.

Plot

The movie is set in the background of late 1980s and early 90s Rajasthan and centres around the heinous gang rapes of 250 school-collage girls by a number of influential people some of which are even associated with Ajmer Sharif’s Shrine.

Based on 1992’s infamous Ajmer mass gang rape scandal, it throws light on the nightmarish life of 250 unfortunate school college girls who were raped, tortured and blackmailed by a group of influential people. It further shows the struggle of a dedicated journalist who goes against powerful and corrupt politicians to expose the wrongdoers to save the rape victims by getting the culprits punished for their obnoxious acts.

Story

The movie begins with the story of two newspaper journalists Madhav and his rival Mohan (Akash Dahiya) out of which, the latter falls in love with the Police Superintendent’s daughter Geeta (Sumit Singh). Later, the story takes a shocking turn when Geeta runs into an influential Politically leader Yakub (Mahesh Balraj) who rapes and blackmails her and leaves her vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Madhav’s rival Mohan causes an outcry in the whole town by publishing a naked picture of a girl on the front page of his newspaper. Following his objectionable publishing, Mohan gets mysteriously murdered while his victim Pooja takes her own life after the incident.

After Geeta’s Rape and Mohan’s shocking death, Madhav along with the authorities digs into the matter and while doing so, horrifying truth gets unearthed and it gets revealed to him that not just Geeta but hundreds of girls have been gang raped and blackmailed by influence political leaders.

How Madhav fights for Justice and exposes the wrongdoer and their heinous acts is the remaining story of the movie.

Cast

In its leading case,t Ajmer 92 stars some talented but relativity less popular actors including Karan Verna, Zarina Wahab, Sumit Singh and Rajesh Verma. Besides the leads, the movie features Sayaji Shinde, Seerat Kaur, Manoj Joshi, Shalini Kapoor, Brijendra Kala and Alka Aminin in supporting roles.

Acting

Barring the commendable acting by the movie’s leads Karan Verma and Rajesh Sharma, the rest of the movie’s actors have just been okayish with their performance. Nevertheless, every actor seems to have done justice to their respective roles.

Direction

Pushpendra’s direction is passable but the grasping story of the movie compensates for it pretty well by making the viewers feel like a part of the movie. The movie’s careful storytelling, which is backed by facts and credible sources further adds to strengthening its narrative.

Verdict

Ignoring the movie’s rushed screenplay, lack of face value, and gloomy climax, Ajmer 92 comes as a decent retelling of one of the most heinous and darkest periods of Indian history. It further manages to captivate the audience by sticking to the facts and addressing the shortcoming in the country’s legal system which allows people to get away with such heinous acts.

The movie also does a fair job of provoking the thoughts and emotions of the public through its impactful portrayal of the pain and suffering faced by the victims of these heinous crimes.

In conclusion, Ajmer 92 is a decently crafted movie with a compelling and hard-hitting story based on real events and is a must-watch for the audience that likes to see something socially relevant and meaningful on the big screen.
