Cyberbunker is OUT today: suspenseful German documentary will take you to the criminal underworld; details here

New Delhi: The German documentary, Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld, is an in-depth look at the criminal underworld, and it will be accessible on Netflix starting today, November 08, 2023. It is directed by Max Rainer and Killian Lieb, who are also the creators of the documentary.

As the focus of this new documentary, dark underground cyber activity in Germany takes place in what seems to be an otherwise perfect little town. In Cyberbunker, we learn how a secret subterranean bunker from the Cold War period became the nerve centre of a shadowy and infamous cybercrime organisation.

A gang of Dutchmen led by Herman Xennt want to take over a massive NATO bunker beneath Traben-Trarbach. Xennt and his men first promise the community a great future, but something is off. As an underworld flourishes in peace, big activities are needed.

Trailer of the Documentary

The documentary’s official trailer was uploaded on YouTube by Netflix on October 23, 2023. The video revealed that as many as 650 law enforcement personnel, including members of elite tactical teams, were sent to deal with the situation. In the voiceover, Herman Xennt is called a “darknet Guru” by one character, and a “007 James Bond” villain by another, both of whom agree that he can run a massive international criminal operation beneath the nose of an entire community.

The video opens with strange people lurking in the woods, their movements illuminated only by the lights on their machine guns. There’s a flurry of activity, and then the individuals are exposed as armed police officers, who are cautiously making their way through what looks like an abandoned bunker full of ghosts. It becomes immediately apparent, however, that this is no typical underground shelter.

Storyline

The documentary primarily tells the tale of how a gang of Cold War-era hackers in a German vacation town fuelled the deep web. Two different universes collide in this storey. Among them is a mystery band of Dutchmen led by a man named Xennt. The second target is a massive NATO bunker the Dutch want to seize. The head of the Dutchmen, Xennt, says the community will have a prosperous future. But when Traben-streets Trarbach’s become the birthplace of a new criminal underworld, many begin to question Xennt’s sincerity.

The Original Incident of Cyberbunker

The Netflix series is based on a real tale, and a great summary of the events can be found on the website of The New Yorker. It’s the tale of how a bunch of hackers ran a criminal enterprise on the Dark Web from a deserted bunker and how the German federal paramilitary police tracked them down and arrested them.

The New Yorker says that they took more than 100,000 euros in cash along with 412 hard drives, 433 servers, 65 USB sticks, 61 computers, 57 phones, and stacks of paperwork. The arrests and the subsequent raid included around 650 police officers.
