New Delhi: Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio appreciated the Assam government’s efforts to stop the one-horned rhinoceros poaching in the state. The actor shared a post on his Instagram handle to laud the efforts to save the endangered species in Asssam’s Kaziranga National Park. Last year witnessed zero one-horned rhinos being poached and the achievement was noted by the global star.
Taking on to Instagram, DiCaprio shared a picture of a rhinoceros and wrote that the Assam government decided to put an end to rhino poaching in 2021 after 190 rhinos were killed between 2000-21 for their horns. He added that in 2022, for the first time since 1977, no rhino was poached in the Kaziranga National Park. The actor wrote that the National Park is home to 2,200 greater one-horned rhinos, about two-thirds of the total population.
Apart from being an actor, Leonardo DiCaprio is also an environmentalist. He often uses social media as a platform to talk about environmental issues and his Instagram feed is proof of it. He also has a Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) which functions to save endangered species across the globe.
Over the years, LDF has contributed funds for saving Napal’s wild tiger population, Black Rhino in Tanzania, and snow leopards and has also contributed to marine conservation projects.

Kaziranga National Park is the habitat for the largest rhino population and their poaching reduced in the years 2020 and 2021, while the number came down to zero last year. Assam’s CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed about this feat as we entered the new year.
