Plot

Despite standing right next to each other, Chidori Public High School and Kikyo Private Academy for Girls might as well exist on different planets. Wealthy, influential families reserve Kikyo for their daughters, making it the epitome of prestige—polished and elite. In contrast, Chidori has earned a notorious reputation as a haven for underachievers and hot-headed troublemakers. Tensions run high between the two schools, and Kikyo students, in particular, harbor a deep-seated disdain for their rougher neighbors at Chidori.

Among Chidori’s students is Rintarou Tsumugi, a quiet 16-year-old whose naturally stern face makes him seem unapproachable and even dangerous to others.Although many people misunderstand Rintarou, he doesn’t mind when they leave him alone. He’s content spending time with his few close friends, and he keeps to himself. But he has never mentioned one thing to them — he helps out at his family’s quaint little cake shop after school.

One afternoon at work, Rintarou notices a girl sitting alone at a table. Before he can serve her, she abruptly runs off, leaving him confused. The mystery doesn’t last long, though — the very next day, the girl returns with a heartfelt apology. Her name is Kaoruko Waguri, and to Rintarou’s surprise, she insists that her sudden departure wasn’t because of his appearance. In fact, she says she believes he’s a gentle soul beneath the tough exterior.

Kaoruko expresses a warm and bubbly personality unlike anything Rintarou is used to, but her sincerity piques his interest. As the two begin to bond, Rintarou finds himself drawn to her kindness and honesty.
