Plot
The film follows Sarah, an ordinary woman who lives with her husband, Paul, and their teenage daughter, Carly. Their lives take a surreal and tragic turn when Sarah develops a bizarre and unexplained condition that causes her body to gradually rise into the air as if she is being pulled towards the sky by an invisible force.
At first, Sarah notices small changes. She starts floating slightly off the ground, hovering for brief moments before landing back down. Her family is confused and frightened. But they assume it is a temporary anomaly. However, as time passes, Sarah’s condition worsens. She begins to drift higher and higher, her feet barely touching the floor. Doctors are at a loss to explain her condition.
It seems to defy all known medical or physical laws. As her floating intensifies, Sarah and her family desperately try to find ways to keep her grounded. They use ropes, harnesses, and even furniture to weigh her down. Paul and Carly struggle with the emotional and physical toll of Sarah’s condition.
They grow more distressed as they realize they cannot stop her gradual ascent. Sarah, too, is terrified but tries to remain strong for her family.
Sarah’s inevitable rise into the sky serves as a powerful metaphor for terminal illness and the slow process of losing a loved one. Paul becomes increasingly desperate, clinging to Sarah as she drifts further from him. Carly struggles with anger and sorrow, grappling with the idea of losing her mother in such an inexplicable way.
Despite their efforts, Sarah continues her ascent. She reaches the upper levels of their home, then the rooftop, and beyond. Soon, Paul and Carly are forced to confront the painful truth—they cannot bring her back down.
The Kármán Line is a poignant and haunting short film that blends magical realism with raw human emotion.
