Plot
Set in the year 2040, the protagonist of The Kitchen, an ex-con named Izi, is trying to distance himself from London’s criminal underworld. Attempts by 12-year-old Benzi and Izi to escape the Kitchen, the largest and most difficult housing estate for destitute, homeless people like them, are at the story’s core.
The elimination of social housing and welfare systems has also forced individuals to resort to unethical practices in their search for necessities. At this point, many have little choice except to relocate to a social housing site. The Kitchen is the name of such a community.
Nearly all working-class people in The Kitchen live in filthy housing estates controlled by strong, enigmatic individuals; society has collapsed. The wealth disparity has grown exponentially, and most of the population now lives on the periphery of cities, where they survive via acts of violence and theft.
