Plot

At just 11 years old, George Washington “Wash” Black has only ever known life as an enslaved boy on a brutal sugar plantation in 19th-century Barbados. Marked by hardship, fear, and the weight of a world that denies his humanity, Wash’s days are defined by survival. But everything changes when his life intersects with Christopher “Titch” Wilde, the brilliant but unconventional brother of his cruel master.

Titch is an eccentric scientist and inventor, obsessed with the idea of flight and other technological wonders. Unlike the plantation’s overseers, he sees something remarkable in Wash—curiosity, intelligence, and untapped potential. When Wash is falsely accused of a violent crime that could cost him his life, Titch makes a radical decision: to rescue the boy by fleeing the island together, not by land or sea, but by air.

Thus begins an extraordinary escape, as the pair lift off aboard Titch’s experimental flying machine, soaring away from the shackles of slavery into an unknown world. What starts as a desperate flight for freedom becomes the beginning of a sweeping, globe-trotting odyssey that will take Wash from the Caribbean to the icy expanses of the Arctic, the bustling cities of Nova Scotia, and the intellectual salons of London.

Along the way, Wash grapples with profound questions of identity, freedom, and belonging. Who is he, beyond what the world has told him? What does it mean to truly be free—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually? As he grows older and more self-aware, Wash must confront the complex dynamics of his relationship with Titch, who, despite his good intentions, remains a privileged white man shaped by a colonial world.
