New Delhi: Addressing a ‘thanksgiving’ rally in Punjab on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress and alleged that it had betrayed the peasantry and used them as vote bank to further the interests of “one particular family”.
PM Modi said that the recent hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Kharif crops — approved by the NDA government — has brought much relief to the farmers across country.
“Ever since the government took the historic decision to hike MSP, the farmers are relieved. They are more confident in their produce now. However, the Congress and its allies are losing sleep. They cannot stand the fact that farmers in the country are sleeping well,” Modi said at the kisan rally in Punjab’s Muktsar district.
Modi said that despite toiling hard, farmers could not think of a comfortable life and that they had to live a life of despair and despondency for decades because of the policies of the Congress-led governments.
In a veiled attack on the Gandhi family, he said if the Congress had any worry, it was “only for one particular family” and how to make them comfortable.
“I know why for years you could fetch only 10 per cent profit on the cost of inputs incurred by you. I know what was the interest behind this. Farmers are soul of our nation, they are our ‘annadata’, but the Congress always betrayed them and told lies to them…. The Congress used them as vote bank,” the prime minister told a farmers’ rally.
Govt trying to restore respect to farmers, soldiers
PM Modi said the NDA government has taken several steps for the benefit of farmers and soldiers. Addressing the rally, Mr Modi said the NDA government is trying to restore respect to farmers and soldiers through various schemes.
He reiterated his commitment to double farmers’ income by 2022. He stated that efforts are being made in this direction for the past four years.
The Prime Minister spoke about the increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP) for kharif crops, efforts taken to improve soil health, neem coating of urea and ensuring better markets for farmers.
Mr Modi also thanked the farmers for filing the granaries with record production in the past four years.
The Prime Minister said that be it ensuring food security or defending the borders, Punjab has always inspired the country. He said the NDA government fulfilled the promise of One Rank One Pension (OROP).
