Vijaywada: The death toll in yesterday’s boat tragedy in Krishna river at Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 19 following the recovering of three more bodies this morning.

State disaster response and fire services department’s director general N Satyanarayana said while two bodies were recovered by teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), another was fished out by personnel of his department.

Satyanarayana suspected four more persons missing. He said, they are pressing scuba divers into service to trace them. He said, the bodies could have floated away since there is a lot of water movement. The search and rescue operation has been intensified, he said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a thorough investigation in the mishap.

The boat was carrying over 35 passengers. Eyewitnesses said, 32 of the total passengers belonged to the Ongole Walkers Club who came on a pleasure trip. The boat left Punnami Ghat near Bhavanipuram at around 5:30 PM to Pavitra Sangamam of Krishna and Godavari rivers to watch Harathi at Ferry village.

Andhra Pradesh government has announced an exgratia of 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
