Patna/New Delhi: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is firm on backing NDA presidential pick Ram Nath Kovind. He said that decision to support Kovind has been taken after a lot of discussion with the leaders of the Janata Dal (United).

With Lalu Prasad Yadav asking him not to commit what he called historical blunder by backing NDA candidate, Nitish Kumar hit back and said: “We have a lot of respect for Meira Kumar ji, but ‘Bihar ki beti’ has been nominated only to lose? We have taken independent decisions in the past also, we had supported Pranab da as President when we were in NDA.”

This way Nitish has made it clear that he is not going to relent on his decision to support Ram Nath Kovind. Bihar CM argued that opposition should prepare to win elections in 2019 and it should then ensure that Meira Kumar is made president in 2022. He further said that there were opportunities in the past when Meira Kumar could have been made president. Why did they not go for her then, asked he.

Nitish attended Iftar party hosted by Lalu Prasad amidst political slugfest over the choice of president. Congress-led opposition (17 parties) on Thursday announced candidature of Meira Kumar, a dalit veteran leader from Bihar, and sought to counter NDA move in this regard.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, whose party is sharing power with JDU in Bihar, appealed to Nitish Kumar to change his mind and support opposition candidate Meira Kumar instead of Kovind, the NDA nominee for the president post.

In order to put pressure on Nitish, RJD leader said that it was Bihar CM who first initiated the effort to have an opposition candidate for presidential election. It was Nitish who gave the slogan Sangh mukt Bharat, quipped Lalu.
