Karnataka elections: Cong backs JD(S) to keep BJP out of power
Bengaluru: In a surprise turn of events, the Congress said today it will extend support to the JD(S) in forming the next government in Karnataka as the counting is likely to throw up a hung Assembly.
Cong, JD(S) to meet governor this evening to stake claim
JD(S)’s HD Kumaraswamy today sought appointment from the Governor of Karnataka this evening.
“We have accepted Congress’s support to form the Government”, He wrote in a letter to Governor.
Cong’s unconditional support to JD(S)
Congress senior Ghulam Nabi Azad and Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah confirmed that the party had a telephonic conversation with JDS chief Deve Gowda and his son HD Kumaraswamy offering unconditional support.
“They have accepted our offer. Hopefully, we will be together,” Azad said.
Siddaramaih said he accepts the mandate of the people. “We bow our heads to the verdict. We don’t have numbers to form govt.” he said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters after a meeting with central Congress leaders, including Gulam Nabi Azad, that the party will back the JD(S) in forming the government.
It was not yet clear if the Congress would extend support from outside or be part of the new government.
“We have decided that the Congress will extend support to the JD(S) to form the government. That’s the best way to keep the BJP out (of power),” Siddaramaiah said.
Azad said a Congress delegation will meet Governor Vajubhai Vala in the evening.
