New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over reported unabated violence in Asansol-Raniganj area.

Taking suo-motu cognizance of media reports, alleging failure of the law enforcing agencies in protecting the right to life, liberty and dignity of the innocent people, the commission has asked its DG (Investigation) to depute a team for spot inquiry.

NHRC has asked the DG to visit the disturbed areas of Asansol-Raniganj and assess the actual situation and submit a report within three weeks. Several people have died and a police officer has also sustained grievous injuries in the violence.

The commission has expressed serious concern over the situation and has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police of the state calling for a detailed report within four weeks.
