New Delhi: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi hosted dinner for leaders of 17 Opposition parties at her 10 Janpath residence on Tuesday.
The dinner, attended by the likes of Sharad Pawar, Omar Abdullah, Tejashwi Yadav and others, is aimed at forging a united alliance to counter the BJP might in upcoming elections.
The dinner hosted by Mrs Gandhi is expected to set the tone for opposition unity in the run-up to the next general elections in 2019.
Those attending the dinner included Sharad Pawar of NCP, Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party, D Raja of CPI, Mohd. Salim of CPI (M), Sudip Bandyopadhyay of TMC, Kanimozhi of DMK, and Tejasvi Yadav of RJD.
Commenting on the dinner, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Dinner hosted by Sonia ji for Opposition parties should not be seen from the prism of politics, it was for friendship and better dialogue between parties.”
Sonia Gandhi had recently called for opposition unity, saying that the parties should set aside their minor differences to get together in the larger interest of keeping the BJP out of power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
