Aircel-Maxis case: SC to hear ED plea against Marans on Feb 8
New Delhi, Feb 3: Enforcement Directorate on Friday moved Supreme Court against the order of a special court which discharged former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his industrialist brother Kalanithi Maran and others in the Aircel-Maxis case.
Officials said the agency appealed the order as it believes that its probe in the money laundering charges was a standalone investigation and the proceeds of crime detected by it were independent of CBI’s FIR and inquiry.
The Special CBI court Judge OP Saini had similarly dismissed the CBI case against the accused. Dealing with the money laundering case, the court observed that since the accused were discharged in the case of scheduled offense registered by CBI, the Enforcement Directorate’s matter had become groundless and that nothing survived in it.
The ED had charge-sheeted the Maran brothers, Kalanithi’s wife Kavery and Managing Director of South Asia FM Ltd K Shanmugam under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA.
