Attack on Sunjuwan Army camp: Two terrorists gunned down
Jammu: Two Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) were martyred and six people including women and children were injured in a terrorist attack on the Sunjwan Military Station on Saturday morning.
The Army, in its retaliatory action, has gunned down two heavily armed terrorists. The operation is still underway to kill or apprehend the hiding militants, if any.
In a media briefing, the Army confirmed that two terrorists have been killed in the counter-operations. Arms and ammunitions, including AK-56 rifles and hand grenades have been recovered from their possession.
“The terrorists were wearing combat uniforms carrying AK 56 assault rifle, large amount of ammunition and hand grenades. Search of their belongings confirms the terrorists to be from Jaish-e-Mohammed,” it said.
“The operation will continue till all terrorists are apprehended or killed,” an Army official said.
Most of the 150 houses in the complex have been cleared and the occupants moved to safety.
“Operations are in progress with extreme caution and restraint to safeguard the unarmed soldiers, women and children in the houses,” the Army statement said.
Heavily-armed terrorists wearing combat uniforms attacked an army base on Saturday morning. The terrorists managed to enter the Sunjuwan Army Camp from the rear gates. It is not clear how many terrorists carried out the attack but two of them, belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammed, have been killed.
Making a statement in the State Legislative Assembly regarding the incident, State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, A R Veeri said that at about 04.10 this morning, a group of terrorists attacked Sunjwan Military Station resulting in death of Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhary and Subedar Mohammad Ashraf Mir.
He said, four others, including a civilian, also got injured who have been shifted to GMC Jammu for treatment. The minister said the exact number of terrorists is still not known but as per reports four to five militants are involved in the attack.
Schools in the entire area around the camp have been closed. A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and security beefed up in and around the city.
