New Delhi: Balasaheb Thorat, senior Congress leader in Maharashtra resigned from his position as Congress legislature party (CLP) leader on Tuesday, citing differences with state Congress president Nana Patole.

His resignation from the key party post, comes a day after he dashed off a letter to Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge, stating that he was feeling ‘humiliated’ as a ‘vicious’ campaign was underway against him and it had the support of state party chief.

Balasaheb’s resignation from key party post brings to fore, the widening fissures in Maharashtra Congress. The friction in the state leadership began during Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections.

Maha Congress president Nana Patole, speaking to press, however denied receiving any resignation letter and also denied any reports of differences with Thorat.

“I wish Thoratji ‘many happy returns’ on his birthday today and wished him a long and healthy life… However, I have not got any such letter which is claimed. There should be communication, then only we can discuss the issue,” he told reporters.

According to leading portal, Thorat’s nephew Satyajeet Tambe was denied Congress ticket following which Thorat accused the state leadership of hatching conspiracy against him to cut his stature in the party.

Later, Satyajeet Tambe fought and won elections as an independent candidate, earning him the ire of top party leaders. As Thorat remained mostly silent over his nephew’s defiance against the party, he was seen extending support to the rebel candidate.
