Delhi: Munirka’s Mohammadpur village to be re-named Madhavpuram, MCD okays proposal

Mohammadpur village - Delhi

New Delhi: After proposed renaming of districts in Uttar Pradesh from Aligarh to Harigarh, Miyaganj to Mayaganj, it’s the turn of national capital.

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has approved the name change of Mohammadpur village in Munirka area to Madhavpuram. A proposal in this regard was recently put in the MCD office by BJP councillor Bhagat Singh Tokas.

South MCD Mayor Mukesh Suryan on Thursday signed the papers for anticipatory approval.

In a letter to municipal secretaries, Suryan said, “During Mughal era, names of all villages of Delhi were forcibly changed by the Mughals, including Mohammadpur village. There was a long-pending demand of the people of the village to change the name of the village to Madhavpuram.”

“Keeping in view the demands, sentiments and emotions of the people of the village and requests of area councillor Bhagat Singh Tokas, it would be appropriate if the name of Mohammadpur village is changed to Madhavpuram in public interest,” the Mayor further said in the letter.

What prompted name change in Delhi

Bhagat Singh Tokas, BJP leader and Councillor from Munirka had recently placed a proposal for the name change in zonal meeting of South Delhi Municipal Corporation. He demanded that name of Mohammadpur village in ward number 66 must be changed to Madhavpuram to ‘honour the sentiments of residents’.

The renaming of Mohammadpur village assumes significance as 3 MCDs – North, South and East are heading for polls next year. BJP is heading to take on AAP in the municipal elections and looking to strike strong connect with voters with populist measures.
