India’s first 3D-printed Post Office inaugurated in Bengaluru; Know its features

New Delhi: Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday inaugurated nation’s first of its kind 3D-printed Post Office in Bengaluru. The Post Office, built using the 3D printing technology, is a state-of-art structure and has also been erected in record time of 43 days with reduced expenditures.

The 3D-printed post office has been named ‘Cambridge Layout PO’ in Bengaluru. Post the inauguration, the 1100 square feet structure will begin operations soon and will cater to the citizens with its fast & modern infrastructure.


After virtually inaugurating the country’s first 3D-printed Post Office, the Communications Minister also said that the structure represents the spirit of country with which it is progressing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the unveiling of country’s first 3D post office and said that every citizen of the country would be proud to see it.

“A testament to our nation’s innovation and progress, it also embodies the spirit of a self-reliant India. Compliments to those who have worked hard in ensuring the Post Office’s completion,” PM Modi tweeted.

The 3D Post Office building has been built over 1,000 square feet area. The construction was done by Larsen & Toubro Construction, using 3D concrete printing technology.

According to the leading construction firm, the 3D concrete printing is a fast emerging technology and it has potential to re-write the construction practices as it will not only expedite the process but will also enhance building quality.

Erected in 43 days, with 30-40% less cost

The 3D Post Office has been erected in 43 days, two days before its deadline. Also, the construction cost of the said structure is said to be Rs 23 lakh, which is about 30-40% less as compared to conventional methods of construction, reported a leading daily.

The 3D concrete printing technology differs from conventional methods of construction hugely, as robots are deployed here and also structure is not raised by joining bricks by bricks. The robotic printer puts the concrete, layer by layer followed by special grade concrete, which hardens quickly. This facilitates strong bonding between the layers.
