New Delhi: Karnataka underwent Assembly Elections on May 10 with results due on May 13. The ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party along with Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are the prominent parties in the state and the exit polls suggest a hung assembly with Congress getting the highest number of seats. The state saw a similar situation in the 2018 elections and amid turning tables, BJP finally formed the government.
Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018 Results:
BJP emerged as the largest party with 104 seats in the 2018 elections, Congress won 78, and JD(S) got 37 seats out of the total 224 seats. BJP’s CM candidate BS Yediyurappa was unable to prove a majority and Congress and JD(S) formed a coalition government. The Assembly witnessed turmoil when 16 Congress MLAs resigned and an independent MLA turned in the favour of the BJP.
With the resignations, the majority needed to form the government was reduced to 105 and BJP had the required number. Currently, BJP’s Basavaraj Bommai is the Chief Minister of the state.
While Congress won just 78 seats, the party had the largest vote share of 38.61 percent, followed by BJP’s 36.43 percent and JDS’s share of 20.61 percent. While one seat each was won by BSP and an independent candidate.

While most of the exit polls show a hung assembly with Congress leading the race, agencies Axis My India predicted a clear majority for Congress while Jan Ki Baat predicted a majority for BJP. As per the exit polls, BJP has maintained its strong hold in the Coastal Karnataka region, which is known to be dominated by Hindutva politics while Congress is set to lead in Benagluru, Old Mysore and Maharashtra-Karnataka region.
