New Delhi: After days of dilly-dallying and flip-flops over government formation in Maharashtra, President’s rule has been imposed in the state.

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday recommended imposition of President’s Rule in the state following political stalemate over government formation.

President Ram Nath Kovind approved the Governor’s recommendation, following which the state comes directly under Centre’s control.

Governor recommends Prez rule in Maharashtra

“Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari having been satisfied that as Government of Maharashtra cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, has today submitted a report as contemplated by the provisions of Article 356 of Constitution (President’s Rule),” a Raj Bhavan statement said.

The recommendation for President’s Rule came even as the Governor had on Monday given time to NCP till 8.30 pm on Tuesday to indicate a willingness and ability to form the government.

The Governor had earlier given the same opportunity to Shiv Sena, which finished second in the assembly polls but did not agree to its appeal to give additional time to produce letters of support.

BJP, the single-largest party and the second largest Shiv Sena have failed to stake a claim to form a government in Maharashtra.

Pawar to call the shots in govt formation

NCP leader Nawab Malik today addressed a press conference and said that all 54 MLAs have empowered Sharad Pawar to take call in forging or striking out alliance with Congess and Sena in government formation.

Sena to move court if Prez rule imposed

If the Maharashtra Governor imposes President Rule in the state, Shiv Sena can approach Supreme Court. Uddhav Thackeray has talked to Kapil Sibal and Ahmed Patel over the issue.

Governor recommends President’s rule

According to reports, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has recommended President’s Rule in the state as the tussle refuses to subside in the state.

While Koshyari has recommended President’s Rule in Maharashtra and sent a report on the same to the Centre, it is only after the Union Cabinet’s ratification that Prez Rule can be imposed.

Reports suggest Maharashtra Governor has started consultation with the Centre to discuss modalities of imposing President’s rule in the state.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has called Cabinet meeting, hours ahead of his scheduled Brazil visit for BRICS summit.

BJP’s Ashish Shelar meets Raut in hospital

BJP leader Ashish Shelar met Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut at Lilawati hospital today. What transpired between the two leaders during the meet, which came in the backdrop of the political crisis in the state, was not immediately known.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar also visited Raut at the hospital where he underwent angioplasty. Pawar’s visit to 57-year-old Raut, admitted to the Lilavati Hospital comes in the midst of the ongoing political drama in Maharashtra.

Sonia sends Cong team to Maha

Interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi today spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and authorised senior Congress leaders to meet Pawar for further talks on the Maharashtra government formation.

Sonia Gandhi, CongressCongress leaders Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjuna Kharge and KC Venugopal will be leaving for Mumbai to meet Pawar.

The NCP has till 8:30 pm to stake claim to form government.
