After the failure to provide a safe space for women in the state government, the state government has decided to hand over the duty of the protection of residents in the medical hospitals to retired police personnel. According to the rules, police personnel who have retired in the last two years in the ranks from Inspector to Superintendents will be eligible. Similarly, retired personnel of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force are also eligible to apply.
Meanwhile, as the security of these hospitals is ramped up, a separate legal battle has started in the Supreme Court of India.
What are the guidelines of the Supreme Court?
The apex judiciary body of the country, i.e. the Supreme Court has given the following guidelines after the first hearing of the RG Kar case. The next hearing of the same will take place on the 22nd of August.
- The Supreme Court has requested doctors across the country to return to work. The Court has assured the medical professionals that the Supreme Court is considering their concerns. Their safety is a matter of national priority.
- The court has been told that there are 700 resident doctors in RG Kar Medical College but after the incident of attack on the hospital on the night of 14th and 15th August, most of the resident doctors have left the job. Due to this, only 30 to 40 female doctors and 60 to 70 male doctors are left in the hospital.
- It is important to create a safe environment for doctors and interns in the hospital so that resident doctors can return to work so that they can not only contribute to their studies but also be able to treat patients.
- SG Tushar Mehta has assured the court that CISF/CRPF will be deployed in RG Kar Hospital. The West Bengal government has not expressed any objection to this.
- The court has expressed hope that with the deployment of central security forces in the hospital, the doctors will return to duty as soon as possible. If doctors have any security concerns, they can send an email to the Judicial Registrar and inform the court about their concerns.
