Jewar airport

New Delhi: November 25 is one of the landmark days for Uttar Pradesh as it takes mega strides in the infrastructure creation. Days after the inauguration of Poorvanchal Expressway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the ground-breaking ceremony of Noida International Airport in Gautam Buddh Nagar’s Jewar.

The upcoming airport, which will start its first phase of operation in 2024, will emerge as a big air transit hub in the country. It will be India and Asia’s biggest airport and world’s 4th biggest airport. Adding to the network of airports in Uttar Pradesh, this will be 5th international airport in the state, another first for Yogi-led province.

A look at numbers in terms of investment, revenue & employment generation:

Land – 1,300 hectares

Noida International Airport, being developed as Asia’s largest airport, will cover 1,300 hectares in the first phase of development. It is a greenfield project that will be implemented in four phases. Construction of the first phase will be completed in 36 months. UP govt is spending Rs 4,326 crore on the acquisition of land, rehabilitation and resettlement.

Cost – Rs 10,050 crore

About 10,500 crore is the estimated investment for the first phase of airport. The airport is being developed in partnership with Zurich International Airport AG as concessionaire.

Passenger capacity – 1.2 crore

The International airport will have passenger capacity of over 12 million or 1.2 crore passengers, when the 1st phase gets completed by 2024. Its capacity will be augmented to 70 million passengers per year, when final phase gets completed by 2040-2050.

1 lakh jobs likely

The flagship project of the Yogi govt is likely to generate 1 lakh employment – directly or indirectly. Owing to its strategic location, the airport will serve people of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra, Faridabad and neighbouring areas.

UP only state to have 5 international airports

With this one coming up in Noida, Uttar Pradesh will have 5 international airports, the first state to do so. The state previously had 2 international airports — Lucknow and Varanasi. Last month, Kushinagar International Airport was inaugurated while another one is coming up in temple town of Ayodhya in 2022.
