New Delhi: Robert Vadra, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, and his mother Maureen appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Jaipur on Tuesday, in connection with a probe into an alleged land scam in Bikaner district of Rajasthan.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra dropped them off at ED’s zonal office.

Before heading to ED office, Robert Vadra took to social media and trained his guns at what he called the “vindictive government”.

He said that the government is “harassing” his mother by subjecting her to interrogation and said that this is a new “low” for the government. Vadra alleged that government is playing “gimmicks” as the Lok Sabha elections are just around the corner.

This was Vadra’s first appearance before the ED in Jaipur in connection with charges of money laundering through land deals made by a company linked to him.

The ED had registered a criminal case in September, 2015, taking cognizance of FIRs and chargesheets filed by the Rajasthan police. The ED is searching about the role of Mr Vadra in a firm – M/s Skylight Hospitality Private Limited – which had purchased land in the area.

ED had arrested two persons in this case. The agency had summoned Vadra thrice but he failed to appear and later approached the Rajasthan High Court.

The Rajasthan High Court had asked Mr. Vadra and his mother to cooperate with the agency after they approached it seeking directions that no coercive action is taken against them by the agency.

It is understood that the agency wants to question Mr. Vadra about the operations of a firm — Ms Skylight Hospitality Private Limited — allegedly linked to him, which had purchased land in the area. It also wants to confront Mr. Vadra with the statements of those said to be linked to him.

Vadra is also facing charges of irregular land deals in Haryana’s Gurugram district.
