Noida: Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan (MBCN), an initiative of The Ponty Chadha Foundation and a charitable school for children with special needs, observed International Week of the Deaf 2017 with unique awareness drives. The campaign started on September 18 and will continue till September 22.

These special children visited places such as police station, hospital, mall, bank, vegetable market, departmental store, offices and school and taught people some simple signs of communication for people with speech and hearing impairments.

These children received a warm welcome and fully supported their cause. People participated in the 10-minute interactive sign language lesson with great enthusiasm. The core agenda behind the campaign was to create an environment of a greater accessibility for these children. Moreover the event also aimed at developing better a understanding and empathy towards children with special needs.

The signs lessons were divided into 3 categories; greet, need, and emergency. These basic signs help people easily connect and communicate with any one with speech and hearing impairments. On the occasion, the school also released short video series in three parts in these categories. These videos were released across all social media platforms to further familiarize a larger audience about the sign language.

Recently, the school also initiated a video where the special (दिव्यांग) children of Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan enacted the National Anthem in sign language while the students of Genesis Global School sung and played the instruments. This video is played across all Wave cinemas in the country prior to every movie.

Talking about the initiative, Dr. Vandana Sharma, Director, Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan said, “The week-long events during the International Deaf Week gives us an opportunity to spread awareness regarding the need of people with speech and hearing impairments. We should work towards negating myths related to this disability. We, at MBCN, have been trying to educate people about the special needs of People with Disabilities and have been working towards equipping them for an independent life.”

Set up by late Gurdeep (Ponty) Singh Chadha, MBCN is a school for special children. To educate and prepare special children to live within the community, the school was set up in 1999 with a mission to make these children self-dependent — physically, socially and financially.
