Mumbai: Five people have been killed after a chartered plane crashed near an under-construction building in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar. The plane reportedly crashed in an open area near the building.

CM Fadnavis visits plane crash site

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site of the chartered plane crash in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar.

The CM said it was a worrying incident. “What were the reasons behind the crash and who is responsible for it needs to be found out.”

Aviation ministry orders probe in chartered plane crash

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will conduct a detailed probe into a chartered plane crash in Mumbai today, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) today said.

“The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will conduct a detailed probe into the crash. A DGCA team is already on its way to the spot,” Director General of Civil Aviation B S Bhullar told a news agency.

Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu also asked officials to rush to the spot to assist in the relief operations, an official in the ministry said.

He said the minister also asked the investigation authorities to ascertain the cause of the crash.

Black box recovered:

The black box of the chartered plane that crashed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, has been recovered. There were fears that it may not be recovered after locals trampled all over the crash site.

As per latest updates, five people have died including all the 4 plane crew members. One passer-by also died in the deadly mishap, say reports.

Fire brigade teams have been rushed to the spot and battling the blaze.

The plane – KING AIR C90 – bearing call sign – VT-UPZ crashed into a construction site.

According to the initial information, the chartered plane crashed at 01:35 pm on Thursday at Old Malik Estate, near telephone exchange, Prithvi building in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar (W).

The plane had taken off from Juhu for testing, a ground report said.

Plane belonged to UP Govt, claim denied by latter

Initial reports suggested that the plane belonged to the Uttar Pradesh government. However, it was denied by the state government, saying that they had all the government planes parked in the space.

The plane, a Beechcraft King Air C 90 turboprop, was sold by Uttar Pradesh government to a Mumbai-based UY aviation
the company in 2014.

“The deal was done after the plane had met with an accident in Allahabad,” UP official Avnish Awasthi was quoted as telling ANI.

A private aircraft crashed in Maniklal Estate in Ghatkopar near Sarvodaya hospital, said Sanjay Manjrekar, Deputy Fire officer (Controls).

The incident took place a day after an under-production Sukhoi Su-30MKI jet crashed on Wednesday in Maharashtra’s Nashik. Both piolets in the aircraft ejected safely before the plane crashed.
