FIFA world cup: Brazil to take on Costa Rica, Iceland face Nigeria
New Delhi: On day 9 of the FIFA World Cup in Russia, Brazil will take on Costa Rica in Group E clash at St. Petersburg at 5.30 pm. In the second fixture, Iceland faces Nigeria in Group D match in Volgograd Arena at 8.30 this evening.
Nigeria are considered so far to be one of the underperforming teams of the tournament. The game in Volgograd is so highly anticipated in Iceland that its national post office has announced it will close three hours early as most of the country is expected to watch the game.
The final encounter of the day will see Serbia battle Switzerland at Kaliningrad at 11.30 pm. Serbia heads to this match after a 1-0 victory over the Costa Ricans in their opening game the same day the Brazilians started off.
Since Brazil’s opener also ended in a draw, Group E is wide open right now and Serbia will play today for an outright victory against Switzerland with an eye on the Round of 16.
Yesterday, Croatia entered the Round of 16, drubbing Argentina 3-0 and dragging Lionel Messi’s team on the brink of a humiliating first round exit. In the other two matches, France entered the pre-quarterfinals, beating Peru 1-0 and Denmark held Australia in a 1-1 draw.
