Kedarnath yatra halted after snowfall in Uttarakhand (PICs)
Dehradun: Kedarnath yatra was halted today morning after incessant snowfall at the famous Himalayan shrine since last night.
The continuous snow spell forced authorities to temporarily halt the yatra to Kedarnath shrine and prevent devotees from moving beyond Linchauli and Bhimbali.
Yatra to Kedarnath had begun on April 29 after its portals were reopened for devotees following a six-month winter break when the area remains snowbound.
Rudraprayag District Magistrate Mangesh Ghildiyal said pilgrims have been asked to wait at yatra halts, namely Bhimbali and Linchauli till the weather improves. He added that there is a two-three inch of snow around the shrine at present.
Nearly half a dozen Congress leaders, including former Uttarkhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Tamta and local MLA Manoj Rawat, were also stranded at the shrine due to continuing snowfall, Rudraprayag DM told a news agency.
Ghildiyal said the Yatra has been put on hold only temporarily and will be resumed with improvement in the weather.
Even Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli district received a spell of fresh snowfall.
