Months ahead of the upcoming 2019 LS elections, the political landscape of the country is heating up. Two big-ticket and historic developments in last 10-12 days have set the political ball rolling.

First, the Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav (BSP-SP) gathbandhan and then Priyanka Gandhi’s formal entry into politics – both promise to be game-changer steps by the respective parties while creating major worry for the BJP.

Priyanka Gandhi’s official entry into politics has undoubtedly encouraged and enthused the party rank and file. The party is fired up and raring to go to the hustings.

Priyanka Gandhi officially taking over party post was much-awaited as ‘Priyanka laao, Congress bachao’ slogans have long been chanted by party workers.

Though Congress was earlier hesitant about Priyanka’s foray into politics, her formal launch couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Congress

Congress is already riding high on its success in 3 Hindi heartland states and with Rahul’s popularity steadily rising, the scales are titled towards the grand old party.

Why Priyanka is Cong’s big poll asset?

There is no denying of Priyanka’s mass appeal and charisma. She has galvanised Congress workers in the past and has the charismatic ability to do so at any given time. Her presence at the campaign rallies will not just be a morale booster for party workers but also a major attraction for the electorate.

Priyanka’s striking resemblance with her grandmother Indira Gandhi is certain to reap political benefits for Congress. Owing to Indira Gandhi’s mass appeal in villages and towns alike, the party would look to replicate the same impact with Priyanka donning her look. Her presence at the hustings could tilt the balance in favour of Congress party.

As Rahul declared that her sister’s entry into politics has made their rivals including BJP jittery, the regional parties are also feeling the pressure. They would be forced to re-work their political alignment and strategy.

Which way UP will sway?

With Uttar Pradesh being the gateway to Centre, the biggest state is set to witness high-decibel campaign and triangular contest.

For long, Congress has been on the fringes in the state but with entry of another Gandhi scion, it is likely to be morale-booster for booth-level workers.

Sonia gandhi-priyanka wadra

Priyanka played a key role in striking Congress alliance with Akhilesh in 2017 assembly elections. With Priyanka’s likely blitzkrieg in coming days, many fence-sitters are likely to go to grand old party while those fascinated by Priyanka’s appeal may also switch loyalties.

Challenges for Priyanka and party

However, a few setbacks also greeted the party in last few days. Centre’s decision of 10% quota to upper castes took everybody by surprise while the SP-BSP gathbandhan publicly humiliating the party by offering 2-3 seats in the state is no secret.

Moreover, the land scam controversy associated with Vadra may throw a spanner in her and party’s prospects.

Despite all the odds, Congress seems to have finally bitten the bullet. Now, one will have to wait till May 2019 to see if Priyanka’s charisma will do the magic for Congress.
