New Delhi: Judo is set to make its fourth appearance in the Commonwealth Games. It was first played in CWG in 1990 and then made an appearance in the 2002 and 2014 games as an optional sport. This is also the first time that Judo is featured as a core sport in the history of the games.
India has had a great history in the sport, in 1990 Narendra Singh and Rajendra Dhanger won a bronze each, in 2002 Akram Shah won a silver while Bhupinder Singh won a bronze medal. In the 2014 Glasgow games, India won 2 silver medals and 2 bronze, including 3 medals in Women’s Judo. Sushila Likmabam and Navjot Chana won silver while Kalpana Thoudam and Rajwinder Kaur won bronze medals.
Rules and scoring in Judo
The sport does not include punching, kicking or any form of striking, like that in Karate. The main objective of the sport is to throw an opponent and lock them with a pin or immobilize them with a submission by a joint lock or a choke.
A judoka receives an Ippon or full point by throwing the opponent flat onto the back with ‘control and power’. An Ippon can also be received by a pin lasting 20 seconds or by submission with a chokehold or arm lock. If the intensity of control and power is minimal, the judoka earns a Waza-ari or a half point.
Schedule
Judo will be played in seven weight categories for men and women. It will be held between August 1 and 3 at the Coventry Arena, in which judokas from 34 countries will compete for the medals.
