New Delhi: On the occasion of the 144th birth anniversary of Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, popularly known as ”The Great Gama”, Google shared its doodle on Sunday. The doodle also celebrates the Indian wrestler’s achievement in the ring. Gama Pehlwan is considered to be undefeated throughout his international matches.
Considering his importance in the Indian wrestling culture, we have decided to tell you five hidden facts about his life.
Born in Kashmiri Muslim family
The Great Gama was born to an ethnic Kashmiri family based in the Punjab region of India. It is reported that he was born in 1978. His father was also a wrestler. After the death of his father, the Maharaja of Datia helped Butt in his training.
Died undefeated
The Great Gama is known for being an undefeated streak till his death. Gama started playing matches at the age of 10 and never got defeated. In his life, he conquered prominent wrestlers such as Stanislaus Zbyszko, Frank Gotch, and Benjamin Roller.
It is said that he also saved many lives of Hindus during the time of the partition of India in 1947 before dying in 1960 in Lahore.
Lift stone weighing 1200 kg
There are many stories famous about Gama Pehlwan. However, a story of him lifting a stone weighing 1200 kg and carrying it for some distance is the most known story about him. He completed the task as he wanted to show his strength to avid sports lover Maharaja of Baroda in Gujarat.
The stone is now kept at the museum of Baroda that can only be moved by hydraulic machine.
Bruce Lee took Inspiration form Gama Pehlwan
Chinese actor Bruce Lee, who is famous for his martial arts prowess, is said to draw inspiration from Gama Pehlwan. He was also an avid lover of the Indian wrestler. He also incorporated Gama’s exercise techniques in his techniques.
Faced struggle during his old age
Gama may become a world champion but he was not rich enough to afford the expense related to his heart and asthma-related problems during his old age. After knowing the poor situation, the Pakistan Government reportedly increased his pension and lent monetary support. He, however, died due to a prolonged illness.
