Mushfiqur Rahim enters the history books for his bizarre dismissal, netizens react

Rahim became the first Bangladeshi batsman to be dismissed for obstructing the field.

New Delhi: The veteran Bangladeshi cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, has entered his name in the cricket’s history books for his dismissal on the first day of the second test match, in the two-match series, in Mirpur.

During the 41st over of the innings, being bowled by Kyle Jamison, Rahim defended a ball that, after hitting the ground, came back towards his stumps, which is when Rahim used his hands to deflect the ball, away from the stumps.

The New Zealand team appealed for obstructing the field, which, after being referred to the third empire, went in favor of the bowling team, making Mushfiqur Rahim the first Bangladeshi batsman to be dismissed for obstructing the field.

Interestingly, this is only the eleventh instance in the history of cricket and only the second in test cricket after England’s Leonard Hutton was dismissed for blocking the field in 1951.

What is obstructing the field rule

Law 37.1.2 of MCC, states that a striker is considered to be obstructing the field if, when receiving a ball from the bowler, they intentionally strike the ball with a hand that is not holding the bat. This will hold true regardless of whether it is the first, second, or third strike.
