New Delhi: Nicholas Pooran has etched his name on the leaderboards of the T20 World Cup as he amassed 36 runs in a single over! It was the fifth instance when 36 runs were scored in the annals of T20 cricket history. Whenever the golden number 36 comes up in the minds of cricket fans, everyone jogs down the memory lane of Herschell Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard.
Likewise, now a new name has made it to that elite list. Below are some of the records of similar records made in the past:
- 36 – Yuvraj Singh (IND) vs Stuart Broad (ENG), Durban, 2007
- 36 – Kieron Pollard (WI) vs Akila Dananjaya (SL), Coolidge, 2021
- 36 – Rohit Sharma & Rinku Singh (IND) vs Karim Janat (AFG), Bengaluru, 2024
- 36 – Dipendra Singh Airee (NEP) vs Kamran Khan (QAT), Al Amerat, 2024
- 36 – Nicholas Pooran & Johnson Charles (WI) vs Azmatullah Omarzai (AFG), St. Lucia, 2024
In the ensuing match, Pooran also recorded the highest individual score of this year’s T20 World Cup thereby surpassing the record of American batsman Aaron Jones. Furthermore, the Caribbean Calypsos registered the fourth-best T20 scores in the powerplay.
The six-hitting fiesta!
The slugfest started in the 4th over of the match bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai. Pooran made 26 runs with the bat while the rest 10 runs came from the extras. Omarzai started with a full delivery which was mistimed over the third man for a six. In the very next ball, the right-hand batsman overstepped for a no-ball which was hit for a four.
It was just the trailers of what was to come in the subsequent balls. In the next ball, Omarzai’s misdirected bouncer went for five wides. The no ball stayed, however, Pooran failed to churn out the maximum profits from the delivery. The third ball went for four leg byes as the ball clipped the pads to beat the keeper.
In the last three balls, Pooran hit Omarzai for a four and two sixes to complete a memorable night and pile on more agony for Afghanistan. Subsequently, Omarzai became the second Afghani bowler after Karim Janat to concede 36 runs in an over.
