Somdev Devvarman announces retirement from professional tennis
New Delhi, Jan 1: Somdev Devvarman has announced retirement from professional tennis. Somdev, one of India’s best Singles players in over a decade, made the announcement on Twitter after deciding to miss the forthcoming Chennai Open.
The 31-year-old’s career was hampered by a recurring shoulder injury in 2012. He recovered to stage a comeback but had been missing from the action without any specified reason for some time now.
Somdev is the only Indian Singles player to have come close to winning an ATP title since Leander Paes’s win in the United States in 1998. Somdev had reached the Finals of 2009 Chennai Open and 2011 South Africa Open.
A regular in India’s Davis Cup squad, Somdev appeared in 14 rubbers and played a crucial role in India reaching the World Group back in 2010. He also won the Singles and Doubles Gold medals at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
