Women cricket: India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in first T-20

New Delhi: Indian Women have won the opening encounter of the five-match Twenty20 series against South Africa by seven wickets.

At Potchefstroom today, India overhauled the victory target of 165 runs by scoring 168 for three in 18.5 overs. Opener Mithali Raj was the top scorer with an unbeaten 54. Veda Krishnamurthy was not out on 37 at the other end.

The other notable scorers were Smriti Mandhana who made 28 and Jemimah Rodrigues who was out for 37. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was run out before opening her account.

Earlier, sent in to bat, the South African Women made 164 for 4 in the stipulated twenty overs. Skipper Dane van Niekerk, who opened the innings, top-scored with 38. Chloe Tyron was unbeaten on 32, while Migon du Preez was not out on 31.

The final scores:

South Africa Women – 164 for 4 in 20 overs.

Indian Women – 168 for 3 in 18.5 overs.

Indian women now lead the five-game T20 series by 1-nil.
