New Delhi: The attack at the army camp in Jammu’s Sunjwan comes just two days after an intelligence input suggested that there would be a terror strike coinciding with the death anniversary of Afzal Guru.

Three terrorists of the Afzal Guru squad of the Jaish-e-Mohammad launched an attack on the JCO family quarters in the garrison of the 36 Army Brigade.

There was specific intelligence about a build up by the Jaish ahead of Guru’s death anniversary which was on February 9. The Jammu and Kashmir police sounded off a high alert after getting reliable inputs about the Jaish trying to strike.

The official communication that flashed read, “there are reliable inputs that the Jaish is planning to carry out a fidayeen strike on the forces establishments between February 5 and 11.”

Further the intelligence had also said that the attacks would also coincide with the death anniversary of Maqbool Bhat which falls on February 11.

The IB note also read, “the death anniversary of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat fall on February 9 and February 11 respectively. The militants may also carry out grenade attacks on forces convoys and may also resort to IED blasts. A high level vigil needs to be maintained for the period—from February 5 to February 11 against any such attack.”

“All district SSPs will brief their officers/men on ground and other sister agencies regarding the threat perception” during this period. “We need to take all the preventive measures to thwart the nefarious designs of the militants,” the document reads. “Extra vigil needs to be maintained from 11 p.m to 6 a.m,” the note further read.

The Afzal Guru squad was formed by Maulana Masood Azhar in October 2017. He made the announcement while releasing a book on Afzal Guru. IB officials say that this is a highly dedicated and dangerous squad which had carried out spectacular strikes on Army bases at Mohra, Taghdhar, Samba and Kathua. The squad is being managed by Muhammad Bhai and Abdul Mateen.
