Jaitley passed away in New Delhi on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was 66.He was cremated with full state honours at the Nigambodh Ghat in the national capital on Sunday.

A four-time member of Rajya Sabha, he became a Cabinet minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2000. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from June 2009 to 2014.

In a condolence letter to Sangeeta Jaitley, the Gandhi scion said he is deeply saddened by the demise of her husband. "His voice will no longer reverberate within hallowed portals of the Parliament, we will remember his presence," he wrote.

Several incumbent BJP chief ministers including Devendra Fadnavis, B S Yediyurappa, Trivendra Singh Rawat and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also present at Nigambodh Ghat to bid adieu to the party strongman.

The Congress leader said he will remember Jaitley in many ways as a consummate Delhi insider, somebody who was completely at home in Lutyen's Delhi.

Jaitley was kept under observation at the Cardio Neuro Centre of the hospital. However, his condition kept on deteriorating. Arun Jaitley's last rites were performed on Sunday afternoon at the Nigambodh Ghat in the capital.

The state government announced that national flag will fly at half-mast at all government buildings during this period across the state. Veteran BJP leader Jaitley passed away on Saturday at AIIMS in New Delhi.
