India's second mission to the moon was approved by the cabinet in September 2008, just before the launch of Chandrayaan 1.If the mission is successful, it will be yet another feather in the cap for ISRO whose reputation in this field has grown exponentially.

There will be three more orbit manoeuvres before the lander’s separation from the Orbiter on September 2 and eventual soft landing in the south polar region of the Moon, planned on September 7.

Chandrayaan-2 will explore a region of moon where no mission has ever set foot. The landing site of the mission, at about 70 degrees south latitude, is the southernmost for any mission till date. No country has attempted this before.
