Marie Tharp: Google dedicates Doodle to honour and celebrate American geologist

New Delhi: Search engine giant, Google dedicated its Doodle to celebrate and honour American geologist Marie Tharp and oceanographic cartographer.

The interactive doodle highlights Marie Tharp’s crucial work in the field of geology spaces and ocean science which are traditionally male-dominated.

It was on this day in 1998 when the US Library of Congress named Marie Tharp as one of the greatest cartographers of the 20th century.

The Google Doodle narrates the life and work of Marie Tharp in several slides. A narration is also available on the doodle’s slides. Voices were lent by Caitlyn Larsen, Rebecca Nesel, and Dr. Tiara Moore who is also following Marie Tharp’s footsteps.

In the Doodle, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is also featured.

Marie Tharp was born in Ypsilanti in Michigan state of United States on 19 July 1920.

Tharp was born to a German and Latin teacher mother and her father was a soil surveyor for the United States Department of Agriculture.

Marie Tharp was introduced to mapmaking first during her trips with her father on his fieldwork.

Tharp was the first women to work at the Lamont Geological Observatory in New York City.

It was in 1957 when Tharp and Heezen co-published the first map of the ocean floor in the North Atlantic.
