Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the DigiLocker service and Aadhaar as a foundational identity document will be used to establish a one-stop solution for the reconciliation and updating of the identity and address documents maintained by various government agencies, regulators and regulated entities.
What is DigiLocker?
DigiLocker is a cloud document storage app developed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) under the government’s Digital India initiative. It is used for storing important documents like PAN cards, driving licences, Aadhaar cards, school mark sheets and others. This enables people to not carry their physical IDs and documents while they have them stored in DigiLocker.
The storage wallet can be used for KYC and other verification purposes. Now, the DigiLocker facility can also be used for updating documents without actually visiting government offices.
How to use it?
- Apply for a DigiLocker wallet at http://www.digilocker.gov.in/, using your mobile number and Aadhar number.
- Fill in your details.
- Create a security pin and enter your email ID.
- Create your username and password.
- Click on a plug-in, such as PAN, motor vehicles, etc. to import your documents.
- Upload documents.
One can also use the DigiLocker app to get started.
