49th CJI: Who Is Justice UU Lalit?

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has become the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Saturday.

Mr Lalit would hold the office before his retirement on November 8, 2022.

He has become the second direct appointee from the Bar to become the CJI after former justice Sarv Mittra Sikri. 

He was born on November 1957 in Maharashtra's Solapur. 

His Father UR Lalit was a former additional judge of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court.

Lalit started practising in Maharashtra as an advocate in June 1983. 

He shifted to Delhi to start practice in 1985, joining the chamber of senior advocate Pravin H. Parekh. 

In August 2014, he was directly elevated to the SC on the recommendation of the then CJI Rajendra Mal Lodha. 

Lalit has been a part of judicial benches in several controversial cases, including the one against the unconstitutional nature of triple talaq.
