Panama switches diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China
Panama City: Panama has cut long-standing diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established relations with China.
In a statement, the Panamanian government said, it is breaking its diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and pledges to end all relations or official contact with Taiwan.
It said, the government recognised that there was only one China and that it considers Taiwan part of it. A joint communiqué establishing ties was also signed by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Panama’s Foreign Minister Isabel de Saint Malo in Beijing today.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed anger and regret over Panama’s decision. Taiwan’s minister of foreign affairs, David Lee said in Taipei that, the government expresses serious objections and strong condemnation in response to China enticing Panama to cut ties with Taiwan.
Panama is the second country to switch its recognition to Beijing since Tsai took office last year. In December last year, the African island of Sao Tome and Principe made a similar move, trimming to 20 the number of countries that formally recognise Taiwan.
