Putin vs Superman? DC Comics features surprising guest

New Delhi: The latest instalment of the Superman comic features a cameo from an unexpected guest: Russian President Vladimir Putin. To the surprise of no one, he is portrayed as evil and aggressive.

Like Alan Moore’s Watchmen; which featured President Nixon, Doomsday Clock delved into political subtext by including the Russian president in the eighth issue of the series. In the issue, Putin holds a press conference after Firestorm turned some Russians citizens into the glass and declared it an act of war from the United States.

Superman goes on to interrupt Putin’s press conference to plead with him.

Considering the impact that author Geoff Johns’ Watchmen sequel promises to have on the rest of the DC Universe moving forward, introducing a real-life political adversary does bring a sobering sense of relevance to things. Especially considering his very presence is a threat to the status quo, and could turn the world against costumed heroes once again.

The eighth issue of Doomsday Clock is currently available both digitally and in stores
